Tiny may very well be Barwon Heads artist Chelsea Gustafsson’s ‘thing’ but this talented lady is definitely heading towards big things!
After finishing up with an exhibition at Geelong’s Boom Gallery Chelsea was snapped up by Hut 13 (Swan Street, Richmond) and asked to exhibit within their space.
Each painting in this series is 20cm x 25cm (see, tiny!) with oil and embroidery on linen. Chelsea’s work while small is extremely detailed and hauntingly beautiful.
“Working small really has become ‘my thing’.” Says Chelsea.
“I didn’t always stick to such a small format but it definitely works for me. Especially since introducing needlework to most of my pieces it just seems to balance really nicely. Even though the images are small and my brushes tiny, to me the brush marks and lines are somewhat loose and expressive!”
Chelsea draws her inspiration from everywhere. This particular series is saturated with flowers “I was noticing all of the colour just popping from people’s gardens!” says Chelsea. She even found herself pinching them from her neighbours gardens.
Chelsea’s exhibition titled ‘Paintings by Chelsea Gustafsson opened Tuesday 18th March and will run until Saturday 5th April.
